Whitney & Rachel

Their story and fund raising for the 2019 World Cup.

Road to the World Cup

Rachel and Whitney, or the two “besties” as known in the touch community both started playing this obsessive sport in their respective grade 8 year. Put the two on the same field as team mates and its smooth sailing… put them against each other and it’s a blood battle- highly competitive is an understatement.

The pair only met in 2007 when Whitney braved across the Parkview golf course moving from Greenside High to Parktown Girls where Rachel was attending school. While they did not know each other too well during school they played in many school and Gauteng junior provincial teams together. Rachel was certainly the rebel child, cutting corners and taking chances during warm ups while Whitney took every opportunity to take every drill as seriously as possible. It is certainly worth mentioning that as a junior Rachel was able to represent her country at the Junior world Cup in New Zealand when she was just 16… while Whitney was playing catch up ;)

Since their junior days they have been privileged to represent Gauteng Touch Association in both a senior mixed team set up (2009-2010) as well as the Ladies ‘A’ team (2011-2018). In 2015 the pair had the incredible opportunity to represent South Africa at the Senior Touch Rugby World Cup in Coffs Harbor Australia, playing against world leaders in the sport such as New Zealand and the Aussies. This was an incredible experience which not only heightened their experience in the game but also tested their swimming abilities with torrential downpours being the daily obstacle during every match at the World Cup.

The ‘besties’ have now been announced as being part of the South African Ladies A side which are heading to Malaysia in April 2019. They are extremely excited for the challenge that lies ahead and cannot wait to take to the field together.
